The Shelf Audit Files No. 28 — Who Owns The Building

32,85 kr. DKK

Almost every bottle on the beauty supply shelf was made in a factory whose name is nowhere on the box. The brand on the front wrote up what it wanted, handed the recipe to a plant that fills bottles for a hundred other labels too, and printed its own name on the outside when the truck pulled away. That is most of the aisle. It is normal, and it is legal, and nobody tells you about it.

This book is about the handful that never did it that way — five Black-owned brands that own the building their product comes out of. Not just the name. The lab, the mixing tanks, the bottling line, the warehouse, and the ground it all sits on. There was a day when a Black beauty brand owning its own plant was the whole goal. Most of the shelf gave that up a long time ago. These five did not.

One discipline runs the whole way through, because it is the honest part. Owning the building is a fact anyone can check — there is an address every time. Whether that makes the product better or purer is a different question, and this book will not answer it, because it cannot be proven. What owning the plant tells you is where your dollar lands. That is the axis here, and nothing else.
