The Shelf Audit Files No. 25 — Same First Ingredients

€4.39

There is a bottle of hair oil on the counter that costs fifty dollars for three and a bit ounces — about fifteen dollars an ounce. Two aisles over sits a bottle built the very same way, opening with the very same kind of ingredients, for about eleven dollars. This book lines up five of those matchups so you can see exactly where the extra money goes.

It all turns on one small list. Every jar prints its ingredients in order of how much is in the bottle, so the first five are most of what you are actually holding, and most of what your money paid for. When a cheap jar and a famous jar open with the same first ingredients, the extra thirty or forty dollars did not go into the formula. It went onto the label.

This is a buying guide about the label and the price per ounce — a printed-box fact and a piece of division — never about whether the cheap one performs better on your hair. That part is your hair's call, and this book never makes it. Some of the cheaper picks are Black-owned and some are not, and for these five matchups that is not the axis either.
