The Shelf Audit Files No. 26 — Jamaican Black Castor Oil

On one shelf, a plain jug of Jamaican black castor oil costs about $1.75 an ounce bought straight from the brand. Two feet over, a little dropper of growth serum with that same oil on the label runs more than $8 an ounce. Four to five times the price, for a smaller bottle and the word growth on the front.

That is only half the story. What almost nobody checks is the paperwork — and a lot of what is sold as Jamaican black castor oil never came from Jamaica, and was never roasted the way the real thing is. That is not this book’s conclusion. It is what Jamaica’s own government is now building a national standard to prove.

So this is a buying guide about two questions you can answer without a laboratory: what the real oil actually costs, and whether the bottle in your hand is even the real thing. Every authenticity finding in here belongs to somebody else — a government ministry, a university lab, the brands’ own alerts — and is printed as that source’s finding, named in the same sentence. It is not a medical opinion about your hair or your scalp, and it does not offer one.
